The Skeleton of Your Wall: Know What’s Behind the Drywall Before You Drill
Have you ever stood in front of a wall with a picture, shelf, TV, mirror, or piece of furniture in your hands and thought:
“Where in the world is the stud?”
You’re not alone.

Before you grab the drill and start making holes, it helps to understand the skeleton of the wall. Behind that pretty, smooth sheet of drywall is a framework of wood studs that gives your wall its strength—and knowing where those studs are can save you from crooked projects, unnecessary holes, and a whole lot of frustration.
And speaking as a frugal lady, I have one piece of advice:
Buy the cheap stud finder.
You don't need the fanciest gadget on the shelf. Even an inexpensive stud finder can save you from putting five or six unnecessary holes in your wall while you search for that elusive piece of wood.
So What's Behind Your Drywall?
Most conventionally framed walls are built with vertical studs, usually spaced 16 inches on center. That means the measurement is taken from the center of one stud to the center of the next, not 16 inches of empty space between them.
Your wall also has horizontal pieces at the top and bottom, along with additional framing around doors and windows.
Think of it like the bones of your house.
You've got:
Studs – the vertical supports
Top plate – the horizontal board across the top
Bottom plate – the horizontal board at the floor
King studs – full-height studs beside openings
Jack studs – shorter studs that support door and window headers
Headers – horizontal framing above doors and windows
Cripple studs – shorter studs above or below openings
That's why the wall isn't just an empty cavity behind your drywall. There is a carefully constructed framework underneath it.
And that framework is exactly what you want to find when you're hanging something that needs a solid attachment point.
Why Do I Want to Find a Stud?
Because wood is your friend when you're hanging something with weight.
If you're hanging a lightweight picture, a drywall anchor may be perfectly appropriate. But if you're hanging something heavier—a shelf, cabinet, large mirror, TV mount, grab bar, or other substantial item—you want to know what you're attaching it to.
A screw driven into a wood stud has something substantial to bite into.
A screw driven into empty drywall?
Not so much.
That's where people often end up with the dreaded:
“Well, that didn't hold.”
Followed by:
“Now I have a hole in my wall.”
And then another hole.
And another.
Before you know it, your wall looks like you've been practicing target shooting with a drill.
Let's avoid that.
How to Find a Stud Without Losing Your Mind
There are several ways to locate studs, and you don't necessarily need expensive equipment.
1. Look for Electrical Outlets and Switches
This is one of my favorite clues.
Electrical boxes are typically attached to the side of a wall stud. So when you look at an outlet or light switch, there is very often a stud immediately to one side of that box.
But don't assume that means you can drill anywhere around it.
Electrical wiring may run through the wall cavity, and cables can be routed in different directions.
So use the outlet or switch as a clue to locate the stud—not as permission to start drilling blindly.
Once you identify one stud, you can start looking for the next one based on the typical framing layout.
2. Use Your Knock-Knock Skills
Yes, you can actually knock on the wall.
Tap across the wall with your knuckles.
An area over a stud will generally sound and feel a little more solid. The open spaces between studs tend to have a different, more hollow sound.
Is this foolproof?
Nope.
Paint, drywall thickness, insulation, tile, cabinets, and other construction can make this trick less reliable.
But it's a useful first clue.
Think of it as the poor woman's stud finder.
And sometimes the poor woman's method works just fine.
3. Use a Tape Measure
If you can find one stud, you've got a starting point.
Because studs are commonly laid out 16 inches on center, you can measure approximately 16 inches from the center of that stud to look for the next one.
You may also encounter other framing layouts, including 24-inch-on-center construction, and walls can have irregular framing around doors, windows, corners, and other features.
So don't blindly measure 16 inches and assume you've found a stud.
Measure, then verify.
4. Use a Stud Finder
This is where my frugal heart comes in.
You don't have to buy the most expensive stud finder in the store.
A basic stud finder can be an inexpensive little tool to keep in your toolbox, and for the occasional homeowner project, it can be worth every penny.
Why?
Because a $10-ish tool that helps you find the framing can potentially save you from:
Multiple unnecessary holes
Patching drywall
Repainting
Frustration
Misaligned shelves
A picture or shelf falling off the wall
That's a pretty good return on a small investment.
My rule: If you're going to be drilling into drywall regularly, own a stud finder.
And remember: calibrate and use it according to the manufacturer's instructions. Don't simply trust the first beep. Scan across the area more than once and mark the edges of the stud so you can determine where its center is.
The Frugal Lady's Favorite Rule: Verify Before You Drill
Here's where I want to save you some trouble.
A stud finder isn't magic.
If it tells you there's a stud, verify the location before driving a long screw into the wall.
Scan from several directions. Mark the suspected stud. Look at nearby outlets and switches.
Consider the layout of doors and windows.
Then make your attachment point.
The goal isn't just to find a stud.
The goal is to know where that stud is before you make a hole.
And What If You Can't Find a Stud?
This is important:
USE AN ANCHOR.
Seriously.
If your project doesn't line up with a stud, don't keep drilling holes all over the wall hoping you'll eventually hit one.
That's how you end up with the Swiss-cheese wall.
Instead, choose the appropriate drywall anchor for the weight and type of item you're installing, and follow the anchor manufacturer's weight and installation instructions.
There are different types of anchors, and they're not all designed to hold the same amount of weight.
For a lightweight picture, one type might be perfectly adequate.
For something heavier, you may need a stronger anchoring system, or you may need to modify the mounting location so you can attach directly to framing.
Remember the rule:
If you can find a stud, use the stud.If you can't find a stud, use the right anchor.
And don't use an anchor simply because it's convenient when a solid stud is sitting right behind the drywall.
A Very Important Warning: Electrical Wiring
Now let's talk about something I don't want you learning the hard way.
There can be electrical wiring behind your drywall.
Electrical cables are commonly routed through the wall framing and may be secured to studs. That's one reason you should never assume that an empty-looking spot on the wall is automatically safe to drill.
Your outlets and switches can give you clues about where electrical wiring and boxes are located.
For example, if you're looking at an electrical outlet, there is usually a stud immediately beside the electrical box. Wiring may enter that box from above, below, or another direction depending on how the wall was wired.
Do not assume the wire only runs directly above or below the outlet.
And here's another important safety feature you'll want to know about:
Nail plates.
When wiring or plumbing passes through a framing member in a location where a screw or nail could potentially hit it, a protective metal plate may be installed over the framing.
If you encounter a metal plate when drilling, STOP.
Do not try to drill through it.
That plate may be there specifically to protect an electrical cable or plumbing from fasteners.
When in doubt, stop and investigate—or call a qualified professional.
Why This Little Bit of Knowledge Matters
Understanding the skeleton of your wall changes the way you approach almost every hanging project.
Instead of thinking:
“I hope this screw lands somewhere solid…”
you start thinking:
“Where's the framing?”
That's a much better question.
You start looking at your outlets and switches differently.
You start noticing the 16-inch layout.
You start using a stud finder.
You start understanding why doors and windows have extra framing around them.
And most importantly, you stop treating your drywall like it's the structure holding everything up.
Because it isn't.
The drywall is the skin.
The studs are the skeleton.
Before You Drill: My Simple Wall Checklist
Here's the little checklist I'd keep handy:
1. What am I hanging?Determine how much weight the wall attachment needs to support.
2. Can I find a stud?Start with visual clues, measurements, tapping, and a stud finder.
3. Verify it.Don't trust one scan or one beep.
4. Look around electrical outlets and switches.They can help identify stud locations—but remember that wiring can run in multiple directions.
5. Watch for plumbing and electrical hazards.Never blindly drill into a wall when you don't know what's behind it.
6. If you find the stud, use it.That's usually your strongest and simplest attachment point.
7. If you can't find the stud, use the correct anchor.Don't create ten holes trying to find one.
A Little Knowledge Can Save a Lot of Wall
You don't have to be a professional carpenter to understand what's behind your drywall.
You just need to remember that your walls have a skeleton.
Those vertical studs are usually spaced 16 inches on center, with additional framing around doors, windows, corners, and other openings. Once you understand that basic layout, finding a solid place to attach something becomes much less intimidating.
And if you're a frugal DIYer like me, remember:
A cheap stud finder can be worth its weight in drywall patch!
Spend a few bucks on the tool, take a few extra minutes to locate the framing, and save yourself the holes, the patching, and the headache.
Because there's nothing wrong with being frugal.
Being frugal means buying the little tool that saves you from buying the big repair.
